Authentic Indian Tawa Roti

Yields: 2 Servings Difficulty: Easy Prep Time: 10 Mins Cook Time: 5 Mins Total Time: 15 Mins

India’s staple food alongside rice, this tawa roti has aromatic earthy flavors when cooked on these earthen clay griddles or “tawa”. These Indian “tortillas” have been complimenting curries and vegetables for centuries! These easy to make Roti’s are a must in my household. Serve them hot with your choice of curry.

  • In a bowl, make a soft dough by mixing 1 cup flour, salt, oil and water.
  • Now take a small ball and pat it with the 1/4 cup flour that you have kept aside. Using a rolling pin, roll it into a desired shape and thickness.
  • I recommend using a clay griddle but you can use any griddle/flat pan. Let it heat all the way before you begin cooking the roti's. The trick to making these fluffy roti's is to cook for 1 minute on one side, flip it, then cook for 1.5 minutes on the other side.
  • Lastly, remove off the tawa and place it directly on the gas cook top. They will blow up like a balloon and you can then transfer them on to a plate.
  • Serve hot with the curry of your choice!

Notes

Spread ghee for lasting freshness.
